What People Are Saying
“I became so invested in every one of your characters. You made them all so complex and real and different and, honestly, I want side stories on every single one.”
“Your world-building is deep and complex and leaves so much room for expansion. I love so much how it feels almost like sci-fi, but is fantasy and, yet, also just your average daily existence.”
“There were so many things that made me curious, and it was always a treat when things connected, which you did on several occasions. I wish I could make this text block bigger to match just how enthralled I was with your world!”

I went into The Upper World wanting to dip my toe into the genre and I came out emotionally attached to a group of traumatised angels and that's it: I've signed the contract and joined the romantasy girlie club thanks to Erica Jean 🎟️👋🏻
This has everything: dystopian chaos, rebellion, missions, a sprinkle of military-style training, forbidden love + fates bonds, and ✨ found family ✨ (my ride or die trope across any genre). I can't fault the world building, as someone new to fantasy / romantasy, I never felt lost, just fully immersed and the magic had me hooked 🔮 constantly wanting to learn more.
The group dynamic was everything, every character felt real, distinct personalities, strengths, flaws and I would like to formally apply to join their team immediately. Mena, I loved her 🖤 strong but soft, she's determined, sassy, loyal and her people pleasing tendencies hit close to home, I’d follow her into battle 🗡️ And Azrael, a cinnamon roll in an angel of death costume, a man who could destroy you but instead chooses emotional support. The romance was perfectly balanced, it was a strangers to lovers story, but it never takes over the plot. It just weaves itself in like it belongs there, which made every moment hit harder 💕 Special mention to Lou, quietly protective, lowkey mothering everyone from a distance, I trust her with my life.
The whole story carries these themes of healing, guilt, regret, and trying to reclaim who you are after everything’s been taken from you ❤️🩹 And I was not emotionally prepared for that ending, I will be begging for books 2 + 3 like my life depends on it. I wasn’t ready for it to end and I will be getting a physical copy for my trophy shelf, five stars ✨

This dystopian romantasy was unlike anything I’ve ever read before and I ate it up! I loved the plot, the world building, the characters, the romance… just everything!
The way Azrael yearns for Mena? It’s safe to say that I love him! Mena was also a great FMC, she was strong and full of sass!
I absolutely loved the found family element in this book. The characters faced devastating times together and it only brought them closer. Erica really makes you feel for each character and I loved it.
And that cliffhanger?! What do you mean I have to wait for book 2 for answers?! I need it now😅
— Goodreads Review“I’ve read Upper World four times now (yes, four) and each time I feel as though it’s a new experience. There is so much to take from this story, and I find myself sinking deeper and deeper into its warmth and relatability. Mena and her friends facing adversity side by side is a reminder of the importance of found family, and the unshakeable connection that is formed during times of hardship.
Each character’s development throughout the story underlines the reality of breaking free from what one knew in order to grow as a person. Especially Mena, our FMC who is forced to take the lead against her own will, but always chooses to lead with as much compassion and empathy as she can. Watching her develop from the girl she was forced to be, into the woman she can choose to be, is such a beautiful journey and sets the tone for the story to come in books 2 & 3.
And the MMC. Anyone who knows me knows that Azrael has me in a chokehold and please, I beg you, never release me. The amount of times I had to convince myself that “I’m not crying, you’re crying” just to preserve my own ego is ridiculous. This man (the Angel of DEATH no less) melted me into a damn puddle and then vaporized me into steam and now who knows what I am. I literally don’t have words to even begin to describe my utter yearning. My Pisces heart can never.
If you are a fan of dark dystopian fantasy with a kick of vengeance, a sprinkle of redemption, a dusting of loyal found family, a hint of mischief, and a warm gooey centre of being wrapped in the massive biceps of the Angel of Death, Upper World is the journey for you.”

This book completely pulled me in and did not let go.
This is one of those stories that you sink into... there’s so much happening, so many layers, and twists that keep unfolding in ways you don’t expect. It’s not a quick, mindless read. It’s one you actually experience, and honestly, that made it even better.
Mena was hands down one of my favorite parts of this book. She’s strong and resilient, but not in a way that feels forced or one dimensional. She carries so much, constantly putting others before herself, and you really feel that throughout the story. I loved watching her grow, struggle at times, and still keep going no matter what.
And Azrael?? Their bond is EVERYTHING. The connection between them felt so natural but also intense in the best way. It wasn’t rushed, it wasn’t overpowering; it just fit. Every interaction between them had me sucked in.
But I have to talk about Lou too because I absolutely loved her. The protective, motherly role she played for Mena just hit so hard. She wasn’t loud about it, but you could feel how deeply she cared in every moment. And that scene in the cave?? Yeah… I was not okay. That one had me crying.
The world building was immersive without being overwhelming, and I never felt lost, just completely pulled into this chaotic, emotional, and beautifully layered world. The found family vibes, the tension, and everything these characters go through, it just hits in a way I cannot put into words.
And that ending?? I’m gonna need the next book immediately. This one isn’t just a read, it’s a whole experience and I am here for it!
